Traveling and Business

As I am sitting at my aunt Yannick’s dining room table working on my Fall Classes, I am reflecting on the idea of vacationing and maintaining my business.

I feel fortunate to go on a two month vacation to visit family and friends in my home continent. As I travel, every week I spend some time working on my website, classes, Instagram, and dreaming up new ideas. I have mentioned before that traveling is a huge source of inspiration for me.

So today I finally edited my Fall classes online and I made three flyers that I will be able to share with you soon. You can peek under classes if you want and register behind the scene but it’s not official yet.

It is hard sometimes to balance traveling and taking an hour here and there to plan my work but for me it is mostly a pleasure and fun. Being remote from home enables me to focus on solely working on my website and accounting. I also just filed my quarterly taxes - yes, I had to haul a few documents in order to do this. Despite the challenge, I am able to find pleasure in doing this.

Part of my inspiration stems from the excitement I get from sharing new classes, projects and ideas with you all.

Today I was telling my aunt that I wanted to focus my creative energy on weaving, felting, painting leather earrings, and leatherwork in general. Surprised, she said: what about knitting? Knitting is like cruise control for me. I am always knitting, I knit in the car, the bus, the plane,… on the toilet, while I drive,… just kidding! And a few years ago I decided to stop selling my knitted work because knitting is very time consuming and the competition from grandmothers is fierce. Family members will knit for you for free and I am trying to sell my work for $200 to $2000 a piece so I can’t compete.

In the past I had been toying with the idea of learning silversmithing and pottery making. Today I am leaning towards simplifying and as I said focusing on the trades I already know and on perfecting them.

That being said, I will remain your “Private Knitter, a knitter for money, any old yarn* will do!” to evoque the late Tina Turner, an idol of mine.

Do you travel and run a business or two also? I would love to hear how you juggle the two.

*any old yarn won’t do. “Only the best” thank you Tina!
